Douglas Ryan McKay, age 72, a loving father and professor of history, passed away at 1:55 a.m. on August 15, 2022 from natural causes at the Quaker Heights Care Community in Waynesville, Ohio.
Doug was born in Xenia, Ohio on August 26, 1949 to the late Allen Hayworth McKay and Vivian Ruth Easter McKay. He grew up outside Wilmington, Ohio on McCune Road and was known to fondly reminisce about life on the farm.
After high school he received his bachelor of science degree in education from Ohio State University, and later went on to receive his master’s degree in American history from Wright State University.
Doug utilized his passions to become a professor at Southern State Community College for 19 years where his humor and candid storytelling brought history to life and brightened the minds of many.
Doug is survived by his daughter, Caitlin Drake (Steven McNulty Jr.) McKay, of Chicago; his brothers, Mark McKay and Roderick (Nancy) McKay, both of Wilmington; nieces, Tracy (Stuart) Maquire and Kristin Burke; nephews, Jonathan McKay and Chad (Amanda) McKay; grandniece, Lexi Burke; and grandnephew, Archer Maquire.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Tammy McKay.
The family will have a visitation from noon Friday, August 19 until a small funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, August 19 at the Fisher-Edgington Funeral Home, 97 W. Locust St. at North Mulberry Street, Wilmington, with Pastor Julie Rudd from Wilmington Friends Meeting.
Interment will follow at the Sugar Grove Cemetery, Wilmington.
