THE ADVENTURES OF CREEPING BABY
Before we knew her name, we called her Creepy Baby. Her name is Creeping Baby, Clockwork Doll, Automaton, Mechanized Doll or Robot. When wound with a key the doll appears to crawl, turning her head with each movement. Creeping Baby is just one of the many items in the Clinton County Historical Society collection.
Creeping Baby had two patents. The first was granted to Robert Clay of New York in March 1871. The second was granted to his associate, George Pemberton Clarke in August 1871. In the 1870s, babies were said to creep, rather than to crawl. Crawling was what animals did. Babies creeped.
In April 2015, the History Center was contacted by DASA Arbeitswelt Ausstellung (World of Work Exhibition Center) in Dortmund Germany. The y requested a loan of Creeping Baby for an exhibit on “man-machines-robots.” The exhibit will show at DASA from November 2015 to September 2016, then at their partner, Parque de las Ciencias in Granada Spain from February 2, 2017 to February 2, 2018.

In June, the Clinton County Historical Society Board of Trustees agreed to the international loan of Creeping Baby. Our first order of business was to get Creeping Baby her passport.
In preparation for her first stop in Dortmund Germany, Creeping Baby began an intense course in German.
Creeping Baby was having a little anxiety attack about going on her long trip to DASA Arbeitswelt Ausstellung in Dortmund Germany and then to Parque de las Ciencias in Granada Spain.
Creeping Baby is happy again, after deciding that representing Clinton County during the exhibit “The Robot – An Exhibition on the Relationship Between Man and Machine” was a once in a lifetime adventure for a 144 year old doll.
Creeping Baby had not traveled since her college days, but her suitcase was packed and she in August of 2015 she was on way to Germany. Bye . . . Bye. . . Creeping Baby.

On November 15, 2015 Creeping Babywas on display at DASA Arbeitswelt Ausstellung in Dortmund Germany. She quickly made friends with a smoking oriental, a laughing clown and a Japanese servant.
Knowing that Creeping Baby had never been away from Clinton County for so long a time, in December, Kay morphed to Germany to comfort her.
But, we shouldn’t have worried. Near the museum in Dortmund, Germany they have one of the best and most popular soccer teams, BVB Dortmund. Creeping Baby seems to be curious as to what the 80,000 crowd is so enthusiastic about.
Creeping Baby has adjusted to her new surrounding and new friends. She calls. We skype. She is very excited about Easter and her friends in Germany supplied her with and Easter bunny and eggs.
Creeping Baby has begun to anticipate her appearance at the Parque de las Ciencias in Granada Spain from February 2, 2017 to February 2, 2018. She is brushing up on her Spanish. We sent her a book to study from.
